Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 85 × k = 80 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 85 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 85.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 85 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 85 away: 850 − 85 = 765. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 85: 850 + 85 = 935. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 85 → 170 → 340.

There are 1 multiples of 85 below 100, and 11 below 1,000. A number is in the 85 times table exactly when it divides by 85 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 85 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 85 × 1 = 85 is odd, 85 × 2 = 170 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 85 × 10 = 850, and 85 × 100 = 8,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 850 is 425.

Using the 85 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 85 × 7 = 595, you know 595 ÷ 85 = 7 and 595 ÷ 7 = 85. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Questions

What is 85 × 12?

1,020.

What is half of 85 × 8?

85 × 8 = 680, and half of that is 340, which is 85 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 85 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 85 contain nothing.

What is 85 × 7 and 85 × 8?

85 × 7 = 595 and 85 × 8 = 680. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 1,275 in the 85 times table?

Yes: 1,275 ÷ 85 = 15 with no remainder. 1,276 is not, because dividing it by 85 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 85 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
