Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 97 × k = 90 × k + 7 × k.
  • Each answer is 97 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 97.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 97 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 97 away: 970 − 97 = 873. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 97: 970 + 97 = 1,067. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 97 → 194 → 388.

There are 1 multiples of 97 below 100, and 10 below 1,000. A number is in the 97 times table exactly when it divides by 97 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 97 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 97 × 1 = 97 is odd, 97 × 2 = 194 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 97 × 10 = 970, and 97 × 100 = 9,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 970 is 485.

Using the 97 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 97 × 7 = 679, you know 679 ÷ 97 = 7 and 679 ÷ 7 = 97. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 97 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
    Answer8 × 97 = 776 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $97 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $97 = $388.

    Answer388 ÷ 97 = 4 rows.
  4. A plant grows 97 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 9 weeks?
    Answer9 × 97 = 873 millimetres.

Questions

What is 97 × 12?

1,164.

What is half of 97 × 8?

97 × 8 = 776, and half of that is 388, which is 97 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 97 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 97 contain nothing.

What is 97 × 7 and 97 × 8?

97 × 7 = 679 and 97 × 8 = 776. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 1,455 in the 97 times table?

Yes: 1,455 ÷ 97 = 15 with no remainder. 1,456 is not, because dividing it by 97 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 97 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
