Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 997 × k = 990 × k + 7 × k.
- Each answer is 997 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 997.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 997 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 997 away: 9,970 − 997 = 8,973. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 997: 9,970 + 997 = 10,967. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 997 → 1,994 → 3,988.
Every multiple of 997 is at least 997, so there are none below 100 and 1 below 1,000. A number is in the 997 times table exactly when it divides by 997 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 997 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 997 × 1 = 997 is odd, 997 × 2 = 1,994 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 997 × 10 = 9,970, and 997 × 100 = 99,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 9,970 is 4,985.
Using the 997 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 997 × 7 = 6,979, you know 6,979 ÷ 997 = 7 and 6,979 ÷ 7 = 997. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 997 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
Answer
8 × 997 = 7,976 pencils. - Tickets cost $997 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $997 = $5,982. - 4,985 chairs are set out in rows of 997. How many rows are there?
Answer
4,985 ÷ 997 = 5 rows. - A plant grows 997 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
Answer
11 × 997 = 10,967 millimetres.
Questions
What is 997 × 12?
11,964.
What is half of 997 × 8?
997 × 8 = 7,976, and half of that is 3,988, which is 997 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 997 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 997 contain nothing.
What is 997 × 7 and 997 × 8?
997 × 7 = 6,979 and 997 × 8 = 7,976. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 14,955 in the 997 times table?
Yes: 14,955 ÷ 997 = 15 with no remainder. 14,956 is not, because dividing it by 997 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 997 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
