How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 60 = 13.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 13.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/60, so part = 22 × 60 ÷ 100 = 13.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

13.2 is the 22% share of 60. The remaining 78% is 46.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $60 saves $13.2, so you pay $46.8.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 60 by 22% gives 73.2 and decreasing it by 22% gives 46.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 57.096, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
