How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 40 = 2.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/40, so part = 7 × 40 ÷ 100 = 2.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.8 is the 7% share of 40. The remaining 93% is 37.2, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $40 saves $2.8, so you pay $37.2.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 40 by 7% gives 42.8 and decreasing it by 7% gives 37.2. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 39.804, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
