Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1017 × k = 1010 × k + 7 × k.
  • Each answer is 1017 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1017.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1017 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1017 away: 10,170 − 1017 = 9,153. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1017: 10,170 + 1017 = 11,187. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1017 → 2,034 → 4,068.

Every multiple of 1017 is at least 1017, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1017 times table exactly when it divides by 1017 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1017 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1017 × 1 = 1017 is odd, 1017 × 2 = 2,034 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1017 × 10 = 10,170, and 1017 × 100 = 101,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,170 is 5,085.

Using the 1017 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1017 × 7 = 7,119, you know 7,119 ÷ 1017 = 7 and 7,119 ÷ 7 = 1017. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1017 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1017 = 5,085 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1017 each. How much do 11 tickets cost?
    Answer11 × $1017 = $11,187.
  3. 8,136 chairs are set out in rows of 1017. How many rows are there?
    Answer8,136 ÷ 1017 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1017 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 1017 = 7,119 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1017 × 12?

12,204.

What is half of 1017 × 8?

1017 × 8 = 8,136, and half of that is 4,068, which is 1017 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1017 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1017 contain nothing.

What is 1017 × 7 and 1017 × 8?

1017 × 7 = 7,119 and 1017 × 8 = 8,136. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,255 in the 1017 times table?

Yes: 15,255 ÷ 1017 = 15 with no remainder. 15,256 is not, because dividing it by 1017 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1017 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
