Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1031 × k = 1030 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 1031 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1031.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1031 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1031 away: 10,310 − 1031 = 9,279. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1031: 10,310 + 1031 = 11,341. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1031 → 2,062 → 4,124.

Every multiple of 1031 is at least 1031, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1031 times table exactly when it divides by 1031 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1031 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1031 × 1 = 1031 is odd, 1031 × 2 = 2,062 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1031 × 10 = 10,310, and 1031 × 100 = 103,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,310 is 5,155.

Using the 1031 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1031 × 7 = 7,217, you know 7,217 ÷ 1031 = 7 and 7,217 ÷ 7 = 1031. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1031 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 1031 = 6,186 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1031 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $1031 = $5,155.
  3. 3,093 chairs are set out in rows of 1031. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,093 ÷ 1031 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1031 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
    Answer6 × 1031 = 6,186 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1031 × 12?

12,372.

What is half of 1031 × 8?

1031 × 8 = 8,248, and half of that is 4,124, which is 1031 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1031 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1031 contain nothing.

What is 1031 × 7 and 1031 × 8?

1031 × 7 = 7,217 and 1031 × 8 = 8,248. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,465 in the 1031 times table?

Yes: 15,465 ÷ 1031 = 15 with no remainder. 15,466 is not, because dividing it by 1031 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1031 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
