Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1101 × k = 1100 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 1101 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1101.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1101 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1101 away: 11,010 − 1101 = 9,909. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1101: 11,010 + 1101 = 12,111. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1101 → 2,202 → 4,404.

Every multiple of 1101 is at least 1101, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1101 times table exactly when it divides by 1101 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1101 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1101 × 1 = 1101 is odd, 1101 × 2 = 2,202 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1101 × 10 = 11,010, and 1101 × 100 = 110,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 11,010 is 5,505.

Using the 1101 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1101 × 7 = 7,707, you know 7,707 ÷ 1101 = 7 and 7,707 ÷ 7 = 1101. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1101 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 1101 = 6,606 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1101 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $1101 = $4,404.
  3. 3,303 chairs are set out in rows of 1101. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,303 ÷ 1101 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1101 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 1101 = 12,111 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1101 × 12?

13,212.

What is half of 1101 × 8?

1101 × 8 = 8,808, and half of that is 4,404, which is 1101 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1101 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1101 contain nothing.

What is 1101 × 7 and 1101 × 8?

1101 × 7 = 7,707 and 1101 × 8 = 8,808. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 16,515 in the 1101 times table?

Yes: 16,515 ÷ 1101 = 15 with no remainder. 16,516 is not, because dividing it by 1101 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1101 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
