Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1400 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1400 × k = 1400 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 1400 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1400.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1400 times table is double the answer in the 700 times table: 700 × 6 = 4,200, so 1400 × 6 = 8,400. To multiply 1400 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1400 away: 14,000 − 1400 = 12,600. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1400: 14,000 + 1400 = 15,400. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1400 → 2,800 → 5,600.

Every multiple of 1400 is at least 1400, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1400 times table exactly when it divides by 1400 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1400 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1400 × 10 = 14,000, and 1400 × 100 = 140,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 14,000 is 7,000.

Using the 1400 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1400 × 7 = 9,800, you know 9,800 ÷ 1400 = 7 and 9,800 ÷ 7 = 1400. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1400 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1400 = 7,000 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1400 each. How much do 11 tickets cost?
    Answer11 × $1400 = $15,400.
  3. 4,200 chairs are set out in rows of 1400. How many rows are there?
    Answer4,200 ÷ 1400 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1400 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 1400 = 14,000 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1400 × 12?

16,800.

What is half of 1400 × 8?

1400 × 8 = 11,200, and half of that is 5,600, which is 1400 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1400 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1400 contain nothing.

What is 1400 × 7 and 1400 × 8?

1400 × 7 = 9,800 and 1400 × 8 = 11,200. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 21,000 in the 1400 times table?

Yes: 21,000 ÷ 1400 = 15 with no remainder. 21,001 is not, because dividing it by 1400 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1400 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
