Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1401 × k = 1400 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 1401 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1401.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1401 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1401 away: 14,010 − 1401 = 12,609. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1401: 14,010 + 1401 = 15,411. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1401 → 2,802 → 5,604.

Every multiple of 1401 is at least 1401, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1401 times table exactly when it divides by 1401 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1401 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1401 × 1 = 1401 is odd, 1401 × 2 = 2,802 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1401 × 10 = 14,010, and 1401 × 100 = 140,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 14,010 is 7,005.

Using the 1401 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1401 × 7 = 9,807, you know 9,807 ÷ 1401 = 7 and 9,807 ÷ 7 = 1401. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1401 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1401 = 7,005 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1401 each. How much do 10 tickets cost?
    Answer10 × $1401 = $14,010.

    Answer12,609 ÷ 1401 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1401 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?

Questions

What is 1401 × 12?

16,812.

What is half of 1401 × 8?

1401 × 8 = 11,208, and half of that is 5,604, which is 1401 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1401 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1401 contain nothing.

What is 1401 × 7 and 1401 × 8?

1401 × 7 = 9,807 and 1401 × 8 = 11,208. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 21,015 in the 1401 times table?

Yes: 21,015 ÷ 1401 = 15 with no remainder. 21,016 is not, because dividing it by 1401 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1401 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
