Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1431 × k = 1430 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 1431 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1431.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1431 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1431 away: 14,310 − 1431 = 12,879. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1431: 14,310 + 1431 = 15,741. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1431 → 2,862 → 5,724.

Every multiple of 1431 is at least 1431, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1431 times table exactly when it divides by 1431 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1431 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1431 × 1 = 1431 is odd, 1431 × 2 = 2,862 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1431 × 10 = 14,310, and 1431 × 100 = 143,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 14,310 is 7,155.

Using the 1431 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1431 × 7 = 10,017, you know 10,017 ÷ 1431 = 7 and 10,017 ÷ 7 = 1431. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1431 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 1431 = 5,724 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1431 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
    Answer12 × $1431 = $17,172.

Questions

What is 1431 × 12?

17,172.

What is half of 1431 × 8?

1431 × 8 = 11,448, and half of that is 5,724, which is 1431 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1431 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1431 contain nothing.

What is 1431 × 7 and 1431 × 8?

1431 × 7 = 10,017 and 1431 × 8 = 11,448. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 21,465 in the 1431 times table?

Yes: 21,465 ÷ 1431 = 15 with no remainder. 21,466 is not, because dividing it by 1431 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1431 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
