Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
- Split it: 13 × k = 10 × k + 3 × k. For example 13 × 7 = 70 + 21 = 91.
- Each answer is 13 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 13.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 13 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 13 away: 130 − 13 = 117. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 13: 130 + 13 = 143. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 13 → 26 → 52.
There are 7 multiples of 13 below 100, and 76 below 1,000. A number is in the 13 times table exactly when it divides by 13 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 13 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 13 × 1 = 13 is odd, 13 × 2 = 26 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 13 × 10 = 130, and 13 × 100 = 1,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 130 is 65.
Using the 13 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 13 × 7 = 91, you know 91 ÷ 13 = 7 and 91 ÷ 7 = 13. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 13 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 13 = 39 pencils. - Tickets cost $13 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
Answer
9 × $13 = $117. - 117 chairs are set out in rows of 13. How many rows are there?
Answer
117 ÷ 13 = 9 rows. - A plant grows 13 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 13 = 156 millimetres.
Questions
What is 13 × 12?
156.
What is half of 13 × 8?
13 × 8 = 104, and half of that is 52, which is 13 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 13 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 13 contain nothing.
What is 13 × 7 and 13 × 8?
13 × 7 = 91 and 13 × 8 = 104. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 195 in the 13 times table?
Yes: 195 ÷ 13 = 15 with no remainder. 196 is not, because dividing it by 13 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 13 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
