Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 303 × k = 300 × k + 3 × k.
  • Each answer is 303 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 303.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 303 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 303 away: 3,030 − 303 = 2,727. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 303: 3,030 + 303 = 3,333. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 303 → 606 → 1,212.

Every multiple of 303 is at least 303, so there are none below 100 and 3 below 1,000. A number is in the 303 times table exactly when it divides by 303 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 303 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 303 × 1 = 303 is odd, 303 × 2 = 606 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 303 × 10 = 3,030, and 303 × 100 = 30,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 3,030 is 1,515.

Using the 303 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 303 × 7 = 2,121, you know 2,121 ÷ 303 = 7 and 2,121 ÷ 7 = 303. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 303 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 303 = 1,818 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $303 each. How much do 12 tickets cost?
    Answer12 × $303 = $3,636.
  3. 2,727 chairs are set out in rows of 303. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,727 ÷ 303 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 303 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 303 = 2,424 millimetres.

Questions

What is 303 × 12?

3,636.

What is half of 303 × 8?

303 × 8 = 2,424, and half of that is 1,212, which is 303 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 303 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 303 contain nothing.

What is 303 × 7 and 303 × 8?

303 × 7 = 2,121 and 303 × 8 = 2,424. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 4,545 in the 303 times table?

Yes: 4,545 ÷ 303 = 15 with no remainder. 4,546 is not, because dividing it by 303 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 303 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
