Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 320 is even.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 320 × k = 320 × k + 0 × k.
  • Each answer is 320 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 320.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 320 times table is double the answer in the 160 times table: 160 × 6 = 960, so 320 × 6 = 1,920. To multiply 320 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 320 away: 3,200 − 320 = 2,880. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 320: 3,200 + 320 = 3,520. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 320 → 640 → 1,280.

Every multiple of 320 is at least 320, so there are none below 100 and 3 below 1,000. A number is in the 320 times table exactly when it divides by 320 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 320 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 320 × 10 = 3,200, and 320 × 100 = 32,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 3,200 is 1,600.

Using the 320 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 320 × 7 = 2,240, you know 2,240 ÷ 320 = 7 and 2,240 ÷ 7 = 320. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 320 pencils. How many pencils are in 7 boxes?
    Answer7 × 320 = 2,240 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $320 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $320 = $1,600.
  3. 2,240 chairs are set out in rows of 320. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,240 ÷ 320 = 7 rows.
  4. A plant grows 320 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 320 = 2,560 millimetres.

Questions

What is 320 × 12?

3,840.

What is half of 320 × 8?

320 × 8 = 2,560, and half of that is 1,280, which is 320 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 320 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 320 contain nothing.

What is 320 × 7 and 320 × 8?

320 × 7 = 2,240 and 320 × 8 = 2,560. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 4,800 in the 320 times table?

Yes: 4,800 ÷ 320 = 15 with no remainder. 4,801 is not, because dividing it by 320 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 320 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
