Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 401 × k = 400 × k + 1 × k.
  • Each answer is 401 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 401.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 401 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 401 away: 4,010 − 401 = 3,609. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 401: 4,010 + 401 = 4,411. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 401 → 802 → 1,604.

Every multiple of 401 is at least 401, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 401 times table exactly when it divides by 401 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 401 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 401 × 1 = 401 is odd, 401 × 2 = 802 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 401 × 10 = 4,010, and 401 × 100 = 40,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,010 is 2,005.

Using the 401 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 401 × 7 = 2,807, you know 2,807 ÷ 401 = 7 and 2,807 ÷ 7 = 401. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 401 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 401 = 1,604 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $401 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
    Answer9 × $401 = $3,609.
  3. 3,208 chairs are set out in rows of 401. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,208 ÷ 401 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 401 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
    Answer6 × 401 = 2,406 millimetres.

Questions

What is 401 × 12?

4,812.

What is half of 401 × 8?

401 × 8 = 3,208, and half of that is 1,604, which is 401 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 401 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 401 contain nothing.

What is 401 × 7 and 401 × 8?

401 × 7 = 2,807 and 401 × 8 = 3,208. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 6,015 in the 401 times table?

Yes: 6,015 ÷ 401 = 15 with no remainder. 6,016 is not, because dividing it by 401 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 401 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
