Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 403 × k = 400 × k + 3 × k.
- Each answer is 403 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 403.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 403 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 403 away: 4,030 − 403 = 3,627. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 403: 4,030 + 403 = 4,433. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 403 → 806 → 1,612.
Every multiple of 403 is at least 403, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 403 times table exactly when it divides by 403 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 403 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 403 × 1 = 403 is odd, 403 × 2 = 806 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 403 × 10 = 4,030, and 403 × 100 = 40,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,030 is 2,015.
Using the 403 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 403 × 7 = 2,821, you know 2,821 ÷ 403 = 7 and 2,821 ÷ 7 = 403. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 403 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
Answer
3 × 403 = 1,209 pencils. - Tickets cost $403 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
Answer
9 × $403 = $3,627. - 1,209 chairs are set out in rows of 403. How many rows are there?
Answer
1,209 ÷ 403 = 3 rows. - A plant grows 403 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
Answer
8 × 403 = 3,224 millimetres.
Questions
What is 403 × 12?
4,836.
What is half of 403 × 8?
403 × 8 = 3,224, and half of that is 1,612, which is 403 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 403 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 403 contain nothing.
What is 403 × 7 and 403 × 8?
403 × 7 = 2,821 and 403 × 8 = 3,224. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 6,045 in the 403 times table?
Yes: 6,045 ÷ 403 = 15 with no remainder. 6,046 is not, because dividing it by 403 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 403 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
