Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 404 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 404 × k = 400 × k + 4 × k.
  • Each answer is 404 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 404.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 404 times table is double the answer in the 202 times table: 202 × 6 = 1,212, so 404 × 6 = 2,424. To multiply 404 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 404 away: 4,040 − 404 = 3,636. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 404: 4,040 + 404 = 4,444. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 404 → 808 → 1,616.

Every multiple of 404 is at least 404, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 404 times table exactly when it divides by 404 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 404 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 404 × 10 = 4,040, and 404 × 100 = 40,400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,040 is 2,020.

Using the 404 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 404 × 7 = 2,828, you know 2,828 ÷ 404 = 7 and 2,828 ÷ 7 = 404. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 404 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 404 = 1,212 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $404 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $404 = $3,232.
  3. 2,424 chairs are set out in rows of 404. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,424 ÷ 404 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 404 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 404 = 4,444 millimetres.

Questions

What is 404 × 12?

4,848.

What is half of 404 × 8?

404 × 8 = 3,232, and half of that is 1,616, which is 404 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 404 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 404 contain nothing.

What is 404 × 7 and 404 × 8?

404 × 7 = 2,828 and 404 × 8 = 3,232. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 6,060 in the 404 times table?

Yes: 6,060 ÷ 404 = 15 with no remainder. 6,061 is not, because dividing it by 404 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 404 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
