Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 405 × k = 400 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 405 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 405.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 405 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 405 away: 4,050 − 405 = 3,645. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 405: 4,050 + 405 = 4,455. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 405 → 810 → 1,620.

Every multiple of 405 is at least 405, so there are none below 100 and 2 below 1,000. A number is in the 405 times table exactly when it divides by 405 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 405 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 405 × 1 = 405 is odd, 405 × 2 = 810 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 405 × 10 = 4,050, and 405 × 100 = 40,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 4,050 is 2,025.

Using the 405 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 405 × 7 = 2,835, you know 2,835 ÷ 405 = 7 and 2,835 ÷ 7 = 405. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 405 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 405 = 1,620 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $405 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $405 = $3,240.
  3. 2,430 chairs are set out in rows of 405. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,430 ÷ 405 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 405 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 405 = 4,050 millimetres.

Questions

What is 405 × 12?

4,860.

What is half of 405 × 8?

405 × 8 = 3,240, and half of that is 1,620, which is 405 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 405 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 405 contain nothing.

What is 405 × 7 and 405 × 8?

405 × 7 = 2,835 and 405 × 8 = 3,240. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 6,075 in the 405 times table?

Yes: 6,075 ÷ 405 = 15 with no remainder. 6,076 is not, because dividing it by 405 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 405 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
