Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it: 15 × k = 10 × k + 5 × k. For example 15 × 7 = 70 + 35 = 105.
  • Each answer is 15 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 15.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 15 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 15 away: 150 − 15 = 135. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 15: 150 + 15 = 165. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 15 → 30 → 60.

There are 6 multiples of 15 below 100, and 66 below 1,000. A number is in the 15 times table exactly when it divides by 15 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 15 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 15 × 1 = 15 is odd, 15 × 2 = 30 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 15 × 10 = 150, and 15 × 100 = 1,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 150 is 75.

Using the 15 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 15 × 7 = 105, you know 105 ÷ 15 = 7 and 105 ÷ 7 = 15. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 15 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 15 = 45 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $15 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $15 = $120.
  3. 105 chairs are set out in rows of 15. How many rows are there?
    Answer105 ÷ 15 = 7 rows.
  4. A plant grows 15 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 15 = 120 millimetres.

About this page

Questions

What is 15 × 12?

180.

What is half of 15 × 8?

15 × 8 = 120, and half of that is 60, which is 15 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 15 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 15 contain nothing.

What is 15 × 7 and 15 × 8?

15 × 7 = 105 and 15 × 8 = 120. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 225 in the 15 times table?

Yes: 225 ÷ 15 = 15 with no remainder. 226 is not, because dividing it by 15 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 15 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
