Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 55 × k = 50 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 55 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 55.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 55 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 55 away: 550 − 55 = 495. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 55: 550 + 55 = 605. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 55 → 110 → 220.

There are 1 multiples of 55 below 100, and 18 below 1,000. A number is in the 55 times table exactly when it divides by 55 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 55 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 55 × 1 = 55 is odd, 55 × 2 = 110 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 55 × 10 = 550, and 55 × 100 = 5,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 550 is 275.

Using the 55 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 55 × 7 = 385, you know 385 ÷ 55 = 7 and 385 ÷ 7 = 55. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 55 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
    Answer6 × 55 = 330 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $55 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $55 = $440.
  3. 495 chairs are set out in rows of 55. How many rows are there?
    Answer495 ÷ 55 = 9 rows.
  4. A plant grows 55 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 55 = 550 millimetres.

About this page

Questions

What is 55 × 12?

660.

What is half of 55 × 8?

55 × 8 = 440, and half of that is 220, which is 55 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 55 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 55 contain nothing.

What is 55 × 7 and 55 × 8?

55 × 7 = 385 and 55 × 8 = 440. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 825 in the 55 times table?

Yes: 825 ÷ 55 = 15 with no remainder. 826 is not, because dividing it by 55 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 55 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
