Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 53 × k = 50 × k + 3 × k.
- Each answer is 53 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 53.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 53 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 53 away: 530 − 53 = 477. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 53: 530 + 53 = 583. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 53 → 106 → 212.
There are 1 multiples of 53 below 100, and 18 below 1,000. A number is in the 53 times table exactly when it divides by 53 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 53 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 53 × 1 = 53 is odd, 53 × 2 = 106 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 53 × 10 = 530, and 53 × 100 = 5,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 530 is 265.
Using the 53 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 53 × 7 = 371, you know 371 ÷ 53 = 7 and 371 ÷ 7 = 53. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 53 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
Answer
6 × 53 = 318 pencils. - Tickets cost $53 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
Answer
9 × $53 = $477. - 106 chairs are set out in rows of 53. How many rows are there?
Answer
106 ÷ 53 = 2 rows. - A plant grows 53 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 53 = 318 millimetres.
Questions
What is 53 × 12?
636.
What is half of 53 × 8?
53 × 8 = 424, and half of that is 212, which is 53 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 53 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 53 contain nothing.
What is 53 × 7 and 53 × 8?
53 × 7 = 371 and 53 × 8 = 424. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 795 in the 53 times table?
Yes: 795 ÷ 53 = 15 with no remainder. 796 is not, because dividing it by 53 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 53 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
