Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 18 is even.
- The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
- Split it: 18 × k = 10 × k + 8 × k. For example 18 × 7 = 70 + 56 = 126.
- Each answer is 18 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 18.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 18 times table is double the answer in the 9 times table: 9 × 6 = 54, so 18 × 6 = 108. To multiply 18 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 18 away: 180 − 18 = 162. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 18: 180 + 18 = 198. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 18 → 36 → 72.
There are 5 multiples of 18 below 100, and 55 below 1,000. A number is in the 18 times table exactly when it divides by 18 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 18 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 18 × 10 = 180, and 18 × 100 = 1,800. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 180 is 90.
Using the 18 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 18 × 7 = 126, you know 126 ÷ 18 = 7 and 126 ÷ 7 = 18. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 18 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
Answer
4 × 18 = 72 pencils. - Tickets cost $18 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
Answer
9 × $18 = $162. - 72 chairs are set out in rows of 18. How many rows are there?
Answer
72 ÷ 18 = 4 rows. - A plant grows 18 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 18 = 108 millimetres.
Questions
What is 18 × 12?
216.
What is half of 18 × 8?
18 × 8 = 144, and half of that is 72, which is 18 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 18 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 18 contain nothing.
What is 18 × 7 and 18 × 8?
18 × 7 = 126 and 18 × 8 = 144. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 270 in the 18 times table?
Yes: 270 ÷ 18 = 15 with no remainder. 271 is not, because dividing it by 18 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 18 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
