Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 87 × k = 80 × k + 7 × k.
  • Each answer is 87 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 87.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 87 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 87 away: 870 − 87 = 783. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 87: 870 + 87 = 957. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 87 → 174 → 348.

There are 1 multiples of 87 below 100, and 11 below 1,000. A number is in the 87 times table exactly when it divides by 87 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 87 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 87 × 1 = 87 is odd, 87 × 2 = 174 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 87 × 10 = 870, and 87 × 100 = 8,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 870 is 435.

Using the 87 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 87 × 7 = 609, you know 609 ÷ 87 = 7 and 609 ÷ 7 = 87. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 87 pencils. How many pencils are in 8 boxes?
    Answer8 × 87 = 696 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $87 each. How much do 7 tickets cost?
    Answer7 × $87 = $609.
  3. 696 chairs are set out in rows of 87. How many rows are there?
    Answer696 ÷ 87 = 8 rows.
  4. A plant grows 87 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 87 = 609 millimetres.

Questions

What is 87 × 12?

1,044.

What is half of 87 × 8?

87 × 8 = 696, and half of that is 348, which is 87 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 87 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 87 contain nothing.

What is 87 × 7 and 87 × 8?

87 × 7 = 609 and 87 × 8 = 696. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 1,305 in the 87 times table?

Yes: 1,305 ÷ 87 = 15 with no remainder. 1,306 is not, because dividing it by 87 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 87 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
