How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 48 ÷ 100 = 0.48
  2. Multiply: 0.48 × 60 = 28.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 48%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 48/100 = part/60, so part = 48 × 60 ÷ 100 = 28.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =48%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28.8 is the 48% share of 60. The remaining 52% is 31.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 48% off an item priced $60 saves $28.8, so you pay $31.2.

Adding and taking away 48%

Increasing 60 by 48% gives 88.8 and decreasing it by 48% gives 31.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 48% and then lowering the result by 48% ends at 46.176, because the second 48% is taken of a bigger number.
