How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 60 = 58.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 58.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/60, so part = 98 × 60 ÷ 100 = 58.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

58.8 is the 98% share of 60. The remaining 2% is 1.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $60 saves $58.8, so you pay $1.2.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 60 by 98% gives 118.8 and decreasing it by 98% gives 1.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 2.376, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
