Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1008 is even.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1008 × k = 1000 × k + 8 × k.
  • Each answer is 1008 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1008.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1008 times table is double the answer in the 504 times table: 504 × 6 = 3,024, so 1008 × 6 = 6,048. To multiply 1008 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1008 away: 10,080 − 1008 = 9,072. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1008: 10,080 + 1008 = 11,088. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1008 → 2,016 → 4,032.

Every multiple of 1008 is at least 1008, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1008 times table exactly when it divides by 1008 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1008 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1008 × 10 = 10,080, and 1008 × 100 = 100,800. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,080 is 5,040.

Using the 1008 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1008 × 7 = 7,056, you know 7,056 ÷ 1008 = 7 and 7,056 ÷ 7 = 1008. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1008 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1008 = 5,040 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1008 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $1008 = $6,048.
  3. 3,024 chairs are set out in rows of 1008. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,024 ÷ 1008 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1008 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
    Answer12 × 1008 = 12,096 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1008 × 12?

12,096.

What is half of 1008 × 8?

1008 × 8 = 8,064, and half of that is 4,032, which is 1008 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1008 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1008 contain nothing.

What is 1008 × 7 and 1008 × 8?

1008 × 7 = 7,056 and 1008 × 8 = 8,064. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,120 in the 1008 times table?

Yes: 15,120 ÷ 1008 = 15 with no remainder. 15,121 is not, because dividing it by 1008 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1008 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
