Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 6, 2, 8, 4, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1006 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1006 × k = 1000 × k + 6 × k.
  • Each answer is 1006 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1006.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1006 times table is double the answer in the 503 times table: 503 × 6 = 3,018, so 1006 × 6 = 6,036. To multiply 1006 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1006 away: 10,060 − 1006 = 9,054. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1006: 10,060 + 1006 = 11,066. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1006 → 2,012 → 4,024.

Every multiple of 1006 is at least 1006, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1006 times table exactly when it divides by 1006 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1006 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1006 × 10 = 10,060, and 1006 × 100 = 100,600. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,060 is 5,030.

Using the 1006 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1006 × 7 = 7,042, you know 7,042 ÷ 1006 = 7 and 7,042 ÷ 7 = 1006. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1006 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1006 = 5,030 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1006 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $1006 = $5,030.
  3. 7,042 chairs are set out in rows of 1006. How many rows are there?
    Answer7,042 ÷ 1006 = 7 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1006 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 1006 = 8,048 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1006 × 12?

12,072.

What is half of 1006 × 8?

1006 × 8 = 8,048, and half of that is 4,024, which is 1006 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1006 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1006 contain nothing.

What is 1006 × 7 and 1006 × 8?

1006 × 7 = 7,042 and 1006 × 8 = 8,048. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,090 in the 1006 times table?

Yes: 15,090 ÷ 1006 = 15 with no remainder. 15,091 is not, because dividing it by 1006 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1006 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
