Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 6, 2, 8, 4, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 36 is even.
- The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
- Split it into tens and ones: 36 × k = 30 × k + 6 × k.
- Each answer is 36 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 36.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 36 times table is double the answer in the 18 times table: 18 × 6 = 108, so 36 × 6 = 216. To multiply 36 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 36 away: 360 − 36 = 324. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 36: 360 + 36 = 396. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 36 → 72 → 144.
There are 2 multiples of 36 below 100, and 27 below 1,000. A number is in the 36 times table exactly when it divides by 36 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 36 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 36 × 10 = 360, and 36 × 100 = 3,600. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 360 is 180.
Using the 36 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 36 × 7 = 252, you know 252 ÷ 36 = 7 and 252 ÷ 7 = 36. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 36 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
Answer
5 × 36 = 180 pencils. - Tickets cost $36 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
Answer
5 × $36 = $180. - 252 chairs are set out in rows of 36. How many rows are there?
Answer
252 ÷ 36 = 7 rows. - A plant grows 36 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 36 = 432 millimetres.
Questions
What is 36 × 12?
432.
What is half of 36 × 8?
36 × 8 = 288, and half of that is 144, which is 36 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 36 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 36 contain nothing.
What is 36 × 7 and 36 × 8?
36 × 7 = 252 and 36 × 8 = 288. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 540 in the 36 times table?
Yes: 540 ÷ 36 = 15 with no remainder. 541 is not, because dividing it by 36 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 36 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
