Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
  • Split it: 17 × k = 10 × k + 7 × k. For example 17 × 7 = 70 + 49 = 119.
  • Each answer is 17 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 17.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 17 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 17 away: 170 − 17 = 153. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 17: 170 + 17 = 187. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 17 → 34 → 68.

There are 5 multiples of 17 below 100, and 58 below 1,000. A number is in the 17 times table exactly when it divides by 17 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 17 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 17 × 1 = 17 is odd, 17 × 2 = 34 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 17 × 10 = 170, and 17 × 100 = 1,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 170 is 85.

Using the 17 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 17 × 7 = 119, you know 119 ÷ 17 = 7 and 119 ÷ 7 = 17. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 17 pencils. How many pencils are in 3 boxes?
    Answer3 × 17 = 51 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $17 each. How much do 8 tickets cost?
    Answer8 × $17 = $136.
  3. 51 chairs are set out in rows of 17. How many rows are there?
    Answer51 ÷ 17 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 17 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 17 = 187 millimetres.

About this page

The table, the patterns and the practice questions are all calculated for 17 when the page is opened, so every fact on it is exact. Use the options above the worksheet to change the number of questions or the largest multiplier.

Questions

What is 17 × 12?

204.

What is half of 17 × 8?

17 × 8 = 136, and half of that is 68, which is 17 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 17 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 17 contain nothing.

What is 17 × 7 and 17 × 8?

17 × 7 = 119 and 17 × 8 = 136. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 255 in the 17 times table?

Yes: 255 ÷ 17 = 15 with no remainder. 256 is not, because dividing it by 17 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 17 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
