Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 28 is even.
- Split it into tens and ones: 28 × k = 20 × k + 8 × k.
- Each answer is 28 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 28.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 28 times table is double the answer in the 14 times table: 14 × 6 = 84, so 28 × 6 = 168. To multiply 28 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 28 away: 280 − 28 = 252. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 28: 280 + 28 = 308. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 28 → 56 → 112.
There are 3 multiples of 28 below 100, and 35 below 1,000. A number is in the 28 times table exactly when it divides by 28 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 28 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 28 × 10 = 280, and 28 × 100 = 2,800. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 280 is 140.
Using the 28 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 28 × 7 = 196, you know 196 ÷ 28 = 7 and 196 ÷ 7 = 28. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 28 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
Answer
4 × 28 = 112 pencils. - Tickets cost $28 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
Answer
5 × $28 = $140. - 252 chairs are set out in rows of 28. How many rows are there?
Answer
252 ÷ 28 = 9 rows. - A plant grows 28 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 28 = 168 millimetres.
Questions
What is 28 × 12?
336.
What is half of 28 × 8?
28 × 8 = 224, and half of that is 112, which is 28 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 28 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 28 contain nothing.
What is 28 × 7 and 28 × 8?
28 × 7 = 196 and 28 × 8 = 224. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 420 in the 28 times table?
Yes: 420 ÷ 28 = 15 with no remainder. 421 is not, because dividing it by 28 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 28 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
