Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 1998 is even.
- The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
- Split it into tens and ones: 1998 × k = 1990 × k + 8 × k.
- Each answer is 1998 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1998.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 1998 times table is double the answer in the 999 times table: 999 × 6 = 5,994, so 1998 × 6 = 11,988. To multiply 1998 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1998 away: 19,980 − 1998 = 17,982. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1998: 19,980 + 1998 = 21,978. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1998 → 3,996 → 7,992.
Every multiple of 1998 is at least 1998, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1998 times table exactly when it divides by 1998 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 1998 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1998 × 10 = 19,980, and 1998 × 100 = 199,800. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 19,980 is 9,990.
Using the 1998 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 1998 × 7 = 13,986, you know 13,986 ÷ 1998 = 7 and 13,986 ÷ 7 = 1998. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 1998 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
Answer
6 × 1998 = 11,988 pencils. - Tickets cost $1998 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $1998 = $11,988. - 7,992 chairs are set out in rows of 1998. How many rows are there?
Answer
7,992 ÷ 1998 = 4 rows. - A plant grows 1998 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 1998 = 11,988 millimetres.
Questions
What is 1998 × 12?
23,976.
What is half of 1998 × 8?
1998 × 8 = 15,984, and half of that is 7,992, which is 1998 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 1998 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1998 contain nothing.
What is 1998 × 7 and 1998 × 8?
1998 × 7 = 13,986 and 1998 × 8 = 15,984. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 29,970 in the 1998 times table?
Yes: 29,970 ÷ 1998 = 15 with no remainder. 29,971 is not, because dividing it by 1998 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 1998 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
