Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
- Every answer is even, because 2000 is even.
- Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
- Split it into tens and ones: 2000 × k = 2000 × k + 0 × k.
- Each answer is 2000 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 2000.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 2000 times table is double the answer in the 1000 times table: 1000 × 6 = 6,000, so 2000 × 6 = 12,000. To multiply 2000 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 2000 away: 20,000 − 2000 = 18,000. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 2000: 20,000 + 2000 = 22,000. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 2000 → 4,000 → 8,000.
Every multiple of 2000 is at least 2000, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 2000 times table exactly when it divides by 2000 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 2000 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 2000 × 10 = 20,000, and 2000 × 100 = 200,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 20,000 is 10,000.
Using the 2000 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 2000 × 7 = 14,000, you know 14,000 ÷ 2000 = 7 and 14,000 ÷ 7 = 2000. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 2000 pencils. How many pencils are in 6 boxes?
Answer
6 × 2000 = 12,000 pencils. - Tickets cost $2000 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
Answer
5 × $2000 = $10,000. - 16,000 chairs are set out in rows of 2000. How many rows are there?
Answer
16,000 ÷ 2000 = 8 rows. - A plant grows 2000 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 2000 = 20,000 millimetres.
Questions
What is 2000 × 12?
24,000.
What is half of 2000 × 8?
2000 × 8 = 16,000, and half of that is 8,000, which is 2000 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 2000 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 2000 contain nothing.
What is 2000 × 7 and 2000 × 8?
2000 × 7 = 14,000 and 2000 × 8 = 16,000. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 30,000 in the 2000 times table?
Yes: 30,000 ÷ 2000 = 15 with no remainder. 30,001 is not, because dividing it by 2000 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 2000 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
