Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 38 is even.
- Split it into tens and ones: 38 × k = 30 × k + 8 × k.
- Each answer is 38 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 38.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 38 times table is double the answer in the 19 times table: 19 × 6 = 114, so 38 × 6 = 228. To multiply 38 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 38 away: 380 − 38 = 342. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 38: 380 + 38 = 418. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 38 → 76 → 152.
There are 2 multiples of 38 below 100, and 26 below 1,000. A number is in the 38 times table exactly when it divides by 38 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 38 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 38 × 10 = 380, and 38 × 100 = 3,800. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 380 is 190.
Using the 38 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 38 × 7 = 266, you know 266 ÷ 38 = 7 and 266 ÷ 7 = 38. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 38 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
Answer
5 × 38 = 190 pencils. - Tickets cost $38 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $38 = $228. - 190 chairs are set out in rows of 38. How many rows are there?
Answer
190 ÷ 38 = 5 rows. - A plant grows 38 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
Answer
11 × 38 = 418 millimetres.
Questions
What is 38 × 12?
456.
What is half of 38 × 8?
38 × 8 = 304, and half of that is 152, which is 38 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 38 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 38 contain nothing.
What is 38 × 7 and 38 × 8?
38 × 7 = 266 and 38 × 8 = 304. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 570 in the 38 times table?
Yes: 570 ÷ 38 = 15 with no remainder. 571 is not, because dividing it by 38 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 38 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
