Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 1: 0.
- Every answer is even, because 40 is even.
- Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
- Split it into tens and ones: 40 × k = 40 × k + 0 × k.
- Each answer is 40 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 40.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 40 times table is double the answer in the 20 times table: 20 × 6 = 120, so 40 × 6 = 240. To multiply 40 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 40 away: 400 − 40 = 360. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 40: 400 + 40 = 440. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 40 → 80 → 160.
There are 2 multiples of 40 below 100, and 24 below 1,000. A number is in the 40 times table exactly when it divides by 40 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 40 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 40 × 10 = 400, and 40 × 100 = 4,000. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 400 is 200.
Using the 40 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 40 × 7 = 280, you know 280 ÷ 40 = 7 and 280 ÷ 7 = 40. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 40 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
Answer
5 × 40 = 200 pencils. - Tickets cost $40 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $40 = $240. - 320 chairs are set out in rows of 40. How many rows are there?
Answer
320 ÷ 40 = 8 rows. - A plant grows 40 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 6 weeks?
Answer
6 × 40 = 240 millimetres.
Questions
What is 40 × 12?
480.
What is half of 40 × 8?
40 × 8 = 320, and half of that is 160, which is 40 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 40 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 40 contain nothing.
What is 40 × 7 and 40 × 8?
40 × 7 = 280 and 40 × 8 = 320. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 600 in the 40 times table?
Yes: 600 ÷ 40 = 15 with no remainder. 601 is not, because dividing it by 40 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 40 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
