Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 42 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 42 × k = 40 × k + 2 × k.
  • Each answer is 42 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 42.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 42 times table is double the answer in the 21 times table: 21 × 6 = 126, so 42 × 6 = 252. To multiply 42 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 42 away: 420 − 42 = 378. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 42: 420 + 42 = 462. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 42 → 84 → 168.

There are 2 multiples of 42 below 100, and 23 below 1,000. A number is in the 42 times table exactly when it divides by 42 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 42 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 42 × 10 = 420, and 42 × 100 = 4,200. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 420 is 210.

Using the 42 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 42 × 7 = 294, you know 294 ÷ 42 = 7 and 294 ÷ 7 = 42. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 42 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 42 = 210 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $42 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $42 = $252.
  3. 210 chairs are set out in rows of 42. How many rows are there?
    Answer210 ÷ 42 = 5 rows.
  4. A plant grows 42 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
    Answer12 × 42 = 504 millimetres.

About this page

The table, the patterns and the practice questions are all calculated for 42 when the page is opened, so every fact on it is exact. Use the options above the worksheet to change the number of questions or the largest multiplier.

Questions

What is 42 × 12?

504.

What is half of 42 × 8?

42 × 8 = 336, and half of that is 168, which is 42 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 42 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 42 contain nothing.

What is 42 × 7 and 42 × 8?

42 × 7 = 294 and 42 × 8 = 336. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 630 in the 42 times table?

Yes: 630 ÷ 42 = 15 with no remainder. 631 is not, because dividing it by 42 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 42 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
