Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 44 is even.
- Split it into tens and ones: 44 × k = 40 × k + 4 × k.
- Each answer is 44 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 44.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 44 times table is double the answer in the 22 times table: 22 × 6 = 132, so 44 × 6 = 264. To multiply 44 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 44 away: 440 − 44 = 396. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 44: 440 + 44 = 484. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 44 → 88 → 176.
There are 2 multiples of 44 below 100, and 22 below 1,000. A number is in the 44 times table exactly when it divides by 44 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 44 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 44 × 10 = 440, and 44 × 100 = 4,400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 440 is 220.
Using the 44 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 44 × 7 = 308, you know 308 ÷ 44 = 7 and 308 ÷ 7 = 44. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 44 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
Answer
5 × 44 = 220 pencils. - Tickets cost $44 each. How much do 9 tickets cost?
Answer
9 × $44 = $396. - 264 chairs are set out in rows of 44. How many rows are there?
Answer
264 ÷ 44 = 6 rows. - A plant grows 44 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 44 = 528 millimetres.
Questions
What is 44 × 12?
528.
What is half of 44 × 8?
44 × 8 = 352, and half of that is 176, which is 44 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 44 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 44 contain nothing.
What is 44 × 7 and 44 × 8?
44 × 7 = 308 and 44 × 8 = 352. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 660 in the 44 times table?
Yes: 660 ÷ 44 = 15 with no remainder. 661 is not, because dividing it by 44 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 44 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
