Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 51 × k = 50 × k + 1 × k.
- Each answer is 51 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 51.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 51 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 51 away: 510 − 51 = 459. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 51: 510 + 51 = 561. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 51 → 102 → 204.
There are 1 multiples of 51 below 100, and 19 below 1,000. A number is in the 51 times table exactly when it divides by 51 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 51 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 51 × 1 = 51 is odd, 51 × 2 = 102 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 51 × 10 = 510, and 51 × 100 = 5,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 510 is 255.
Using the 51 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 51 × 7 = 357, you know 357 ÷ 51 = 7 and 357 ÷ 7 = 51. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 51 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
Answer
5 × 51 = 255 pencils. - Tickets cost $51 each. How much do 10 tickets cost?
Answer
10 × $51 = $510. - 357 chairs are set out in rows of 51. How many rows are there?
Answer
357 ÷ 51 = 7 rows. - A plant grows 51 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 51 = 612 millimetres.
Questions
What is 51 × 12?
612.
What is half of 51 × 8?
51 × 8 = 408, and half of that is 204, which is 51 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 51 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 51 contain nothing.
What is 51 × 7 and 51 × 8?
51 × 7 = 357 and 51 × 8 = 408. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 765 in the 51 times table?
Yes: 765 ÷ 51 = 15 with no remainder. 766 is not, because dividing it by 51 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 51 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
