Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1003 × k = 1000 × k + 3 × k.
  • Each answer is 1003 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1003.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1003 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1003 away: 10,030 − 1003 = 9,027. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1003: 10,030 + 1003 = 11,033. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1003 → 2,006 → 4,012.

Every multiple of 1003 is at least 1003, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1003 times table exactly when it divides by 1003 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1003 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1003 × 1 = 1003 is odd, 1003 × 2 = 2,006 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1003 × 10 = 10,030, and 1003 × 100 = 100,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,030 is 5,015.

Using the 1003 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1003 × 7 = 7,021, you know 7,021 ÷ 1003 = 7 and 7,021 ÷ 7 = 1003. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1003 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 1003 = 4,012 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1003 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $1003 = $4,012.
  3. 7,021 chairs are set out in rows of 1003. How many rows are there?
    Answer7,021 ÷ 1003 = 7 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1003 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 8 weeks?
    Answer8 × 1003 = 8,024 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1003 × 12?

12,036.

What is half of 1003 × 8?

1003 × 8 = 8,024, and half of that is 4,012, which is 1003 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1003 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1003 contain nothing.

What is 1003 × 7 and 1003 × 8?

1003 × 7 = 7,021 and 1003 × 8 = 8,024. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,045 in the 1003 times table?

Yes: 15,045 ÷ 1003 = 15 with no remainder. 15,046 is not, because dividing it by 1003 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1003 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
