Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1004 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1004 × k = 1000 × k + 4 × k.
  • Each answer is 1004 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1004.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1004 times table is double the answer in the 502 times table: 502 × 6 = 3,012, so 1004 × 6 = 6,024. To multiply 1004 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1004 away: 10,040 − 1004 = 9,036. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1004: 10,040 + 1004 = 11,044. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1004 → 2,008 → 4,016.

Every multiple of 1004 is at least 1004, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1004 times table exactly when it divides by 1004 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1004 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1004 × 10 = 10,040, and 1004 × 100 = 100,400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,040 is 5,020.

Using the 1004 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1004 × 7 = 7,028, you know 7,028 ÷ 1004 = 7 and 7,028 ÷ 7 = 1004. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1004 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 1004 = 4,016 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1004 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $1004 = $4,016.
  3. 2,008 chairs are set out in rows of 1004. How many rows are there?
    Answer2,008 ÷ 1004 = 2 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1004 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 1004 = 11,044 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1004 × 12?

12,048.

What is half of 1004 × 8?

1004 × 8 = 8,032, and half of that is 4,016, which is 1004 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1004 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1004 contain nothing.

What is 1004 × 7 and 1004 × 8?

1004 × 7 = 7,028 and 1004 × 8 = 8,032. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,060 in the 1004 times table?

Yes: 15,060 ÷ 1004 = 15 with no remainder. 15,061 is not, because dividing it by 1004 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1004 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
