Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 1012 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1012 × k = 1010 × k + 2 × k.
  • Each answer is 1012 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1012.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 1012 times table is double the answer in the 506 times table: 506 × 6 = 3,036, so 1012 × 6 = 6,072. To multiply 1012 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1012 away: 10,120 − 1012 = 9,108. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1012: 10,120 + 1012 = 11,132. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1012 → 2,024 → 4,048.

Every multiple of 1012 is at least 1012, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1012 times table exactly when it divides by 1012 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1012 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1012 × 10 = 10,120, and 1012 × 100 = 101,200. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,120 is 5,060.

Using the 1012 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1012 × 7 = 7,084, you know 7,084 ÷ 1012 = 7 and 7,084 ÷ 7 = 1012. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1012 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1012 = 5,060 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1012 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $1012 = $6,072.
  3. 3,036 chairs are set out in rows of 1012. How many rows are there?
    Answer3,036 ÷ 1012 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1012 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 1012 = 10,120 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1012 × 12?

12,144.

What is half of 1012 × 8?

1012 × 8 = 8,096, and half of that is 4,048, which is 1012 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1012 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1012 contain nothing.

What is 1012 × 7 and 1012 × 8?

1012 × 7 = 7,084 and 1012 × 8 = 8,096. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,180 in the 1012 times table?

Yes: 15,180 ÷ 1012 = 15 with no remainder. 15,181 is not, because dividing it by 1012 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1012 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
