Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 1013 × k = 1010 × k + 3 × k.
  • Each answer is 1013 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 1013.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 1013 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 1013 away: 10,130 − 1013 = 9,117. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 1013: 10,130 + 1013 = 11,143. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 1013 → 2,026 → 4,052.

Every multiple of 1013 is at least 1013, so there are none below 100 and 0 below 1,000. A number is in the 1013 times table exactly when it divides by 1013 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 1013 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 1013 × 1 = 1013 is odd, 1013 × 2 = 2,026 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 1013 × 10 = 10,130, and 1013 × 100 = 101,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 10,130 is 5,065.

Using the 1013 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 1013 × 7 = 7,091, you know 7,091 ÷ 1013 = 7 and 7,091 ÷ 7 = 1013. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 1013 pencils. How many pencils are in 5 boxes?
    Answer5 × 1013 = 5,065 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $1013 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $1013 = $6,078.
  3. 6,078 chairs are set out in rows of 1013. How many rows are there?
    Answer6,078 ÷ 1013 = 6 rows.
  4. A plant grows 1013 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 1013 = 7,091 millimetres.

Questions

What is 1013 × 12?

12,156.

What is half of 1013 × 8?

1013 × 8 = 8,104, and half of that is 4,052, which is 1013 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 1013 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 1013 contain nothing.

What is 1013 × 7 and 1013 × 8?

1013 × 7 = 7,091 and 1013 × 8 = 8,104. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 15,195 in the 1013 times table?

Yes: 15,195 ÷ 1013 = 15 with no remainder. 15,196 is not, because dividing it by 1013 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 1013 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
