Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0.
  • The digits of every answer add up to a multiple of 9.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 27 × k = 20 × k + 7 × k.
  • Each answer is 27 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 27.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 27 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 27 away: 270 − 27 = 243. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 27: 270 + 27 = 297. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 27 → 54 → 108.

There are 3 multiples of 27 below 100, and 37 below 1,000. A number is in the 27 times table exactly when it divides by 27 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 27 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 27 × 1 = 27 is odd, 27 × 2 = 54 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 27 × 10 = 270, and 27 × 100 = 2,700. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 270 is 135.

Using the 27 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 27 × 7 = 189, you know 189 ÷ 27 = 7 and 189 ÷ 7 = 27. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 27 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 27 = 108 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $27 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $27 = $135.
  3. 81 chairs are set out in rows of 27. How many rows are there?
    Answer81 ÷ 27 = 3 rows.
  4. A plant grows 27 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 7 weeks?
    Answer7 × 27 = 189 millimetres.

Questions

What is 27 × 12?

324.

What is half of 27 × 8?

27 × 8 = 216, and half of that is 108, which is 27 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 27 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 27 contain nothing.

What is 27 × 7 and 27 × 8?

27 × 7 = 189 and 27 × 8 = 216. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 405 in the 27 times table?

Yes: 405 ÷ 27 = 15 with no remainder. 406 is not, because dividing it by 27 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 27 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
