Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
  • Every answer is even, because 34 is even.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 34 × k = 30 × k + 4 × k.
  • Each answer is 34 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 34.

Building it from tables you already know

Every answer in the 34 times table is double the answer in the 17 times table: 17 × 6 = 102, so 34 × 6 = 204. To multiply 34 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 34 away: 340 − 34 = 306. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 34: 340 + 34 = 374. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 34 → 68 → 136.

There are 2 multiples of 34 below 100, and 29 below 1,000. A number is in the 34 times table exactly when it divides by 34 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 34 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 34 × 10 = 340, and 34 × 100 = 3,400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 340 is 170.

Using the 34 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 34 × 7 = 238, you know 238 ÷ 34 = 7 and 238 ÷ 7 = 34. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 34 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 34 = 136 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $34 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
    Answer4 × $34 = $136.
  3. 136 chairs are set out in rows of 34. How many rows are there?
    Answer136 ÷ 34 = 4 rows.
  4. A plant grows 34 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 34 = 340 millimetres.

About this page

Questions

What is 34 × 12?

408.

What is half of 34 × 8?

34 × 8 = 272, and half of that is 136, which is 34 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 34 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 34 contain nothing.

What is 34 × 7 and 34 × 8?

34 × 7 = 238 and 34 × 8 = 272. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 510 in the 34 times table?

Yes: 510 ÷ 34 = 15 with no remainder. 511 is not, because dividing it by 34 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 34 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
