Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 23 × k = 20 × k + 3 × k.
- Each answer is 23 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 23.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 23 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 23 away: 230 − 23 = 207. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 23: 230 + 23 = 253. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 23 → 46 → 92.
There are 4 multiples of 23 below 100, and 43 below 1,000. A number is in the 23 times table exactly when it divides by 23 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 23 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 23 × 1 = 23 is odd, 23 × 2 = 46 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 23 × 10 = 230, and 23 × 100 = 2,300. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 230 is 115.
Using the 23 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 23 × 7 = 161, you know 161 ÷ 23 = 7 and 161 ÷ 7 = 23. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 23 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
Answer
4 × 23 = 92 pencils. - Tickets cost $23 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $23 = $138. - 92 chairs are set out in rows of 23. How many rows are there?
Answer
92 ÷ 23 = 4 rows. - A plant grows 23 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 12 weeks?
Answer
12 × 23 = 276 millimetres.
Questions
What is 23 × 12?
276.
What is half of 23 × 8?
23 × 8 = 184, and half of that is 92, which is 23 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 23 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 23 contain nothing.
What is 23 × 7 and 23 × 8?
23 × 7 = 161 and 23 × 8 = 184. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 345 in the 23 times table?
Yes: 345 ÷ 23 = 15 with no remainder. 346 is not, because dividing it by 23 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 23 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
