Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 25 × k = 20 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 25 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 25.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 25 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 25 away: 250 − 25 = 225. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 25: 250 + 25 = 275. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 25 → 50 → 100.

There are 3 multiples of 25 below 100, and 39 below 1,000. A number is in the 25 times table exactly when it divides by 25 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 25 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 25 × 1 = 25 is odd, 25 × 2 = 50 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 25 × 10 = 250, and 25 × 100 = 2,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 250 is 125.

Using the 25 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 25 × 7 = 175, you know 175 ÷ 25 = 7 and 175 ÷ 7 = 25. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 25 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 25 = 100 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $25 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
    Answer6 × $25 = $150.
  3. 175 chairs are set out in rows of 25. How many rows are there?
    Answer175 ÷ 25 = 7 rows.
  4. A plant grows 25 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
    Answer10 × 25 = 250 millimetres.

Questions

What is 25 × 12?

300.

What is half of 25 × 8?

25 × 8 = 200, and half of that is 100, which is 25 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 25 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 25 contain nothing.

What is 25 × 7 and 25 × 8?

25 × 7 = 175 and 25 × 8 = 200. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 375 in the 25 times table?

Yes: 375 ÷ 25 = 15 with no remainder. 376 is not, because dividing it by 25 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 25 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
