Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 5: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
- Every answer is even, because 24 is even.
- Split it into tens and ones: 24 × k = 20 × k + 4 × k.
- Each answer is 24 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 24.
Building it from tables you already know
Every answer in the 24 times table is double the answer in the 12 times table: 12 × 6 = 72, so 24 × 6 = 144. To multiply 24 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 24 away: 240 − 24 = 216. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 24: 240 + 24 = 264. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 24 → 48 → 96.
There are 4 multiples of 24 below 100, and 41 below 1,000. A number is in the 24 times table exactly when it divides by 24 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 24 is even, every answer in its table is even, which is a quick way to catch a wrong answer. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 24 × 10 = 240, and 24 × 100 = 2,400. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 240 is 120.
Using the 24 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 24 × 7 = 168, you know 168 ÷ 24 = 7 and 168 ÷ 7 = 24. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 24 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
Answer
4 × 24 = 96 pencils. - Tickets cost $24 each. How much do 6 tickets cost?
Answer
6 × $24 = $144. - 120 chairs are set out in rows of 24. How many rows are there?
Answer
120 ÷ 24 = 5 rows. - A plant grows 24 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 24 = 240 millimetres.
Questions
What is 24 × 12?
288.
What is half of 24 × 8?
24 × 8 = 192, and half of that is 96, which is 24 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 24 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 24 contain nothing.
What is 24 × 7 and 24 × 8?
24 × 7 = 168 and 24 × 8 = 192. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 360 in the 24 times table?
Yes: 360 ÷ 24 = 15 with no remainder. 361 is not, because dividing it by 24 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 24 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
