Patterns that help you remember it
- The last digits repeat in a cycle of 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.
- Split it into tens and ones: 31 × k = 30 × k + 1 × k.
- Each answer is 31 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 31.
Building it from tables you already know
To multiply 31 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 31 away: 310 − 31 = 279. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 31: 310 + 31 = 341. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 31 → 62 → 124.
There are 3 multiples of 31 below 100, and 32 below 1,000. A number is in the 31 times table exactly when it divides by 31 with no remainder.
Odd, even and the last digit
Because 31 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 31 × 1 = 31 is odd, 31 × 2 = 62 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 31 × 10 = 310, and 31 × 100 = 3,100. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 310 is 155.
Using the 31 times table to divide
Every fact also works backwards: because 31 × 7 = 217, you know 217 ÷ 31 = 7 and 217 ÷ 7 = 31. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems
Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:
- A box holds 31 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
Answer
4 × 31 = 124 pencils. - Tickets cost $31 each. How much do 4 tickets cost?
Answer
4 × $31 = $124. - 155 chairs are set out in rows of 31. How many rows are there?
Answer
155 ÷ 31 = 5 rows. - A plant grows 31 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 10 weeks?
Answer
10 × 31 = 310 millimetres.
Questions
What is 31 × 12?
372.
What is half of 31 × 8?
31 × 8 = 248, and half of that is 124, which is 31 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.
What is 31 times 0?
0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 31 contain nothing.
What is 31 × 7 and 31 × 8?
31 × 7 = 217 and 31 × 8 = 248. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.
Is 465 in the 31 times table?
Yes: 465 ÷ 31 = 15 with no remainder. 466 is not, because dividing it by 31 leaves a remainder of 1.
How do I learn the 31 times table quickly?
Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
