Patterns that help you remember it

  • The last digits repeat in a cycle of 2: 5, 0.
  • Every answer ends in 0 or 5.
  • Split it into tens and ones: 35 × k = 30 × k + 5 × k.
  • Each answer is 35 more than the one before, so you can count on in steps of 35.

Building it from tables you already know

To multiply 35 by 9, multiply by 10 and take one 35 away: 350 − 35 = 315. To multiply by 11, multiply by 10 and add one more 35: 350 + 35 = 385. Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 35 → 70 → 140.

There are 2 multiples of 35 below 100, and 28 below 1,000. A number is in the 35 times table exactly when it divides by 35 with no remainder.

Odd, even and the last digit

Because 35 is odd, the answers alternate between odd and even: 35 × 1 = 35 is odd, 35 × 2 = 70 is even, and so on. Multiplying by 10 always puts a zero on the end: 35 × 10 = 350, and 35 × 100 = 3,500. Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10: half of 350 is 175.

Using the 35 times table to divide

Every fact also works backwards: because 35 × 7 = 245, you know 245 ÷ 35 = 7 and 245 ÷ 7 = 35. Practising the table and its division facts together halves the work.

Word problems

Times tables are most useful when you can spot them in a question. Try these, then open each one to check:

  1. A box holds 35 pencils. How many pencils are in 4 boxes?
    Answer4 × 35 = 140 pencils.
  2. Tickets cost $35 each. How much do 5 tickets cost?
    Answer5 × $35 = $175.
  3. 175 chairs are set out in rows of 35. How many rows are there?
    Answer175 ÷ 35 = 5 rows.
  4. A plant grows 35 millimetres a week. How much does it grow in 11 weeks?
    Answer11 × 35 = 385 millimetres.

About this page

Questions

What is 35 × 12?

420.

What is half of 35 × 8?

35 × 8 = 280, and half of that is 140, which is 35 × 4. Halving one factor halves the answer.

What is 35 times 0?

0. Any number multiplied by zero is zero, because zero groups of 35 contain nothing.

What is 35 × 7 and 35 × 8?

35 × 7 = 245 and 35 × 8 = 280. These two are the facts most people find hardest, so they are worth practising on their own.

Is 525 in the 35 times table?

Yes: 525 ÷ 35 = 15 with no remainder. 526 is not, because dividing it by 35 leaves a remainder of 1.

How do I learn the 35 times table quickly?

Learn it in order first, then use the patterns above and practise mixed questions; a few minutes a day works better than one long session.
